Alveolar arch shapes and its relation to complete denture retention

The alveolar ridge consists of denture bearing mucosa, sub-mucosa and periosteum, residual bone. After tooth extraction, the remaining bone undergoes a remodeling process that leads to morphological reduction alteration, which results in change forms. However, it does not arch shapes. This literature review aimed analyze relationship shapes with complete retention. According House (1958), classified into three classes: Class I-square, II-tapering, III-ovoid. Those have difference area, largest site on I-Square shape. Some factors influence retention are adhesion, cohesion, interfacial force, oral facial musculature, atmospheric pressure, undercut, rotational insertion path, parallel walls, gravity. can affect regarding size area.The forms wider area provide more considerable surface contact between mucous membranes. forces resulting from those might produce excellent square shape is area.
